THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL - WESTMEAD

WHAT WE DID

The new Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest paediatric centre in NSW and provides state-of-the-art healthcare to children Australia wide and across the Pacific. The 14 storey Paediatric Services Building features a new perioperative suite that almost doubles the hospital’s previous surgical capacity. Due to the extensive surgical space expansion, our commissioning roll largely involved setting up operating theatre, sterile store and patient recovery pressure boundaries to ensure optimum infection control metrics could be met and maintained at all times.

The administrative areas of the hospital feature multiple variable air volume air handling systems and return air fans. All variable air volume boxes working off a PID loop served by a velocity sensor had to be calibrated for multiple airflow setpoints to ensure accurate airflow control in all modes of system operation.

The hospital also features an extensive smoke zone isolation system to prevent the spread of smoke and fire. The essential service ventilation systems serving these smoke zones had to be carefully manipulated and programmed with multiple speed and pressure set points so as to deliver the correct airflow to the zone and or adjacent zones to ensure the correct smoke exhaust rate and pressure boundary separation.

ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

The $659 million children’s hospital redevelopment at Westmead produced a world leading facility that features over 340 beds, expanded surgical services, dedicated neonatal and paediatric intensive care units and expanded oncology and burn treatment units. All new beds in the hospital are in single-patient bedrooms with private ensuites. The hospital was officially opened by the NSW Premier Chris Minns on the 28th May, 2026. A notable feature of the new facility is the suite of digital operating theatres that allow for real-time collaboration between surgical teams working remotely.
