NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY EXPANSION

WHAT WE DID

In September of 2025 the Newcastle Art Gallery was re-opened to the public. The expansion project which ran from 2022 to 2025, saw the addition of 1600 square meters of exhibition space to the facility. Commissioning the ventilation systems required particular attention to humidity control for artwork preservation. This meant careful metering of outside air quantities to the central air handling systems and accurate calibration of the velocity sensing equipment charged with controlling outside air volumes in response to fluctuations in measured humidity levels in each of the galleries. Once again this required close collaboration with the BMS contractor in calibrating sensors and tuning control loops.

The new facility also features a brand new chilled and heating hot water system, which includes two new Climaveneta reverse cycle chillers. This new chiller plant had to be integrated with existing plant to ensure the additional cooling and heating demands of the expanded facility could be met.

ABOUT THE BUILDING

The Newcastle Art Gallery expansion project constitutes the largest single expansion to cultural infrastructure in the city’s history. The gallery was closed for two years to facilitate the addition of 1600 square meters of exhibition space which more than doubled the available floor area. Of the $22 million allocated to the construction, $12 million came from the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation’s community fundraising activity.
