ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE
WHAT WE DID
This high-profile redevelopment saw the demolition of the old Randwick Pavilion, the Teahouse and the Paddock Stand. The new complex featured increased capacity spectator areas, an amphitheatre-style parade ring and a 1000-seat ballroom . The ballroom features high-level, high volume Trox swirl-style supply air registers. These had to be measured and balanced using elevating work platforms and specially calibrated high-flow capture hoods. Given the high air volumes in question (>500L/s) and the swirl air diffusion of the registers, on-site equipment calibration was required by way of multi-point duct velocity traverses.
The facility also features a multi-zone smoke extraction system in case of fire. This system had to be set-up in conjunction with the fire engineering contractor. Motorised damper controls had to be configured in conjunction with the operation of the smoke extraction fans, whose variable speed drives and duct static pressure sensors were tested and set to deliver the correct volume of exhaust air to each smoke zone.

ABOUT THE BUILDING
Construction of the Randwick Racecourse spectator precinct was completed in 2013 and features a new 6-storey grandstand (complete with bars, restaurants and a night club) as well as a horse parade amphitheatre named “Theatre of the Horse”. This new precinct saw the demolition of the old Randwick Pavilion and the 95 year-old Teahouse Pavilion, to make way for a modern entertainment facility that can be utilised all year round for both horse racing and other corporate functions.
